Chapter 5. Risk assessment: what can we learn from traditional

peoples?

(1) In this chapter I’ll discuss how we assess risks and dangers;
the ways in which we systematically overestimate some types of
risks, and systematically underestimate other types of risks; in

particular, our tendency to ignore the danger of actions that carry
only a low risk each time that we perform that action, but that we
are likely to perform thousands of times; and what we can learn
from how traditional peoples, like New Guineans, assess risks.
