(2) I’ll begin by telling you a story of something that happened

to me early in my career of working in New Guinea, and what
it taught me about New Guineans’ attitude towards danger. At
the time that this story happened, I was inexperienced about
the specific dangers of New Guinea. I was inexperienced about

danger in general, because I was young, only 28 years old,
and I had an attitude that is common among young people,
like my own 27−year−old sons. I felt that I was indestructible,
and that older people like my parents worried too much about

danger, and that dangers might cause harm to them but that they
wouldn’t cause harm to a young strong person like me.

내가 뉴기니에서 작업하던 초창기에 경험했던 사건에 대한 이야
기로 시작해 보려 합니다. 또 그 사건을 통해 위험에 대처하는
뉴기니인의 자세에 대해 내가 무엇을 배웠는지도 말씀드리겠습

니다. 그 사건이 일어났을 때 나는 뉴기니라는 땅에 어떤 위험이
있는지도 몰랐습니다. 당시 28세의 젊은 나이였던 까닭에 전반
적인 위험에 대해서도 큰 인식이 없었습니다. 말하자면, 위험에

대한 인식에서 요즘의 젊은이들과 다를 바가 없었습니다. 나는
금강불괴라고 생각했고, 우리 부모님을 포함해 연장자들이 지
나치게 위험을 겁낸다고 생각했습니다. 또 위험이 노인들에게는
해를 끼칠 수 있어도 나처럼 강한 젊은이에게는 어떤 해도 끼칠

수 없을 거라 생각했습니다.
